Day 2 Shanghai
Your tour of Shanghai starts with Yu Yuan Gardens a 16th century maze of painted pavilions, dragon statues, plants and ponds that surround a well-known zigzag bridge. This Ming Dynasty garden is a fine example of miniature landscaping, and occupies an area of two hectares inside the ancient City God Temple.
Continue your tour of Shanghai with the Shanghai Museum is a museum of ancient Chinese art, situated on the People's Square in the Huangpu District of Shanghai, China. The museum has a collection of over 120,000 pieces. The building has a round top and a square base, symbolizing the ancient Chinese perception of the world as "round sky, square earth.”
Next on your Shanghai tour is the Bund, China’s best-known waterfront, which stretches about 1.6 kilometres along the Huangpu River. Once known as the Wall Street of Asia, and as Revolution Boulevard during the Cultural Revolution, it is lined with beautiful 1930s-era buildings. One of the most elegant and famous of these buildings is the recently remodeled Peace Hotel, which towers over the harbor, offering wonderful views. Step off onto side streets to visit 20s- and ‘30s-style shops and restaurants.
Next on your Shanghai tour itinerary is Xintiandi and Pudong New Development Zone, an arts and crafts enclave that has developed from a renovated residential area in the French Concession area of Shanghai. Known for its small craft stores, coffee shops, art studios and narrow alleys, it has become a popular tourist destination in and provides a good example of local shikumen architecture.
